In this class we'll be discussing both poems and novels to learn more about the important questions in life, and to discover the wisdom that great authors offer to us—wisdom we can apply to our own lives and understanding. We'll grapple with great stories to learn about the qualities and kinds of actions that make a person admirable, such as courage, integrity and compassion, as we compare the heroes and villains in our literary adventure. And we'll discover the special language and power of poetry, that can reveal deep truths in very few and very memorable lines.

This seminar will help you develop your critical thinking skills, refine your essay writing, and deepen your understanding and appreciation of literature as we work with a combination of novels, poems and/or plays. We’ll also delve into the rhetorical analysis of poems, which will help you prepare for the SAT rhetorical essay.
