This class will concentrate on reading comprehension using the novels Code Talkers and Kidnapped. These are examples of historical fiction which share relatable protagonists and themes of coming of age, equality, and identity.

This class partially overlaps with RCBR Level 1, in that some key literary concepts are repeated. It is designed to take those concepts to a deeper level through more complex texts and more detailed analysis. New concepts will also be introduced and discussed. RCBR Level 1 is not required to take this class, though it may be helpful.

Before each session, students will read several chapters and complete a short written assignment. Then they will join the class session prepared to discuss what they read using textual support. Students will compile what they read about and discuss into a book report that they will present to their class towards the end of the course. Sessions will be interactive, and are designed to build comprehension and communication skills needed for general education classrooms and eventually college. By the end of the class, students will be able to think critically about what they read and use textual evidence when communicating their ideas.

Class size: 6-7 students

Class Time: One hour per session

Class Dates: 12 sessions

Teacher: Coach Michelle (BA in English with nine years of teaching experience)

Homework: Around 30-60 mins per session
