Persuasive Writing for G7/G8 |

This class teaches students to compose short persuasive essays to prepare them for writing at the high school level. Students will learn how to create their own arguments based on sample readings and to communicate these arguments using clear, logical, and age-appropriate sentences. This class runs for 10 weeks and will incorporate a homework load of 40-50 minutes each week. Students will be expected to read several sample argumentative essays and short writing prompts. Homework assignments will focus on guiding students through the process of writing and revising the type of 5-paragraph essay most commonly assigned by teachers and standardized tests at the high-school level. Learning Objectives: Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to: 1) Identify original arguments from sample readings that are appropriate for the assigned essay and the individual student’s skill-level; 2) Translate an abstract argument into a clear thesis sentence; 3) Break down arguments into components that can be used as topics for supporting paragraphs; 4) Create flow between sentences and paragraphs using logical agreement and contradiction; 5) Review and edit essays one sentence at a time, checking for word-choice, grammar, and clarity of meaning.
