In this course we will practice creative writing for contests, and explore multiple genres, including fiction, non-fiction, and poetry, to understand each as a distinctive medium, and explore what ties them all together, language, in particular the English language. We will treat the English language like an instrument, and we will introduce ourselves to its chords, its notes, and its orchestral capacity. We will study the meter of narrative, the syllable count of plot, the short story as a lyric, dramatic monologues of poetry as paragraphs, because the aim of literary art is the same regardless of genre: feeling is the goal. Lessons will apply to the specific contest the student is exploring. Coursework includes: writing poems, stories, and essays, which will be submitted to four different contests. By the end of the course students will have written four works of literary art and submitted to four creative writing contests.

I have taught creative writing and expository writing at different institutions, including Cornell University and Brown University. My work has appeared in Black Renaissance / Renaissance Noire, RipRAP Journal, Oxford Magazine, and the Gulf Coast Journal of Literature and Fine Art. I am the recipient of a Rhode Island State Council of the Art Fellowship in Poetry, and an MFA from Cornell University.
