As students today, you are probably bombarded by a number of one-sided arguments you hear in school as well as in the media. Understandably, you might be tempted to just accept these arguments and theories as true without going any deeper. In this class, however, we’ll go deeper. Going deeper—learning how to think through issues and do effective research to find out what’s true—is the ultimate purpose of critical thinking. We’ll be examining some counter-arguments to four popular notions that you’re already likely familiar with. What you’re probably not familiar with are opposing arguments and viewpoints. Our Big Four controversies are these: Gun Control Global Warming Gender Identity/Transgenderism Socialism We’ll be discussing each of these issues in class—but not in a debate format—rather in a fact-finding manner, focusing on the counter-arguments. You’ll be doing some reading and research and you’ll write one essay on each of these controversial topics detailing what you’ve learned from your research and our discussions in class. Class meets for 8 one-hour sessions, and students will write a total of 4 essays, of which 2 will be corrected/edited on Google Docs.
