These are examples of historical fiction in which the main character undertakes a great personal challenge and learns lessons about life along the way. In Banner in the Sky, Rudi sets out on one of the most physically and emotionally challenging ventures possible- mountain climbing. In I am David, David escapes a life of imprisonment and sets out across Europe alone. We will practice identifying key information, perspective, making inferences, and thinking critically as we journey with these characters.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBefore each session, students will read 3 or more chapters and complete a short written assignment. Then they will join the class session prepared to discuss what they read using textual support. Students will compile what they read about and discuss into a book report that they will present to their class towards the end of the course. Sessions will be interactive, and are designed to build comprehension and communication skills needed for general education classrooms and eventually college.
