This 12-week intensive will utilize Jean Latham’s historical fiction novel, Carry on Mr. Bowditch, to teach comprehension and writing skills. Over the course of 12 class sessions, students will read the whole novel, answer short comprehension questions, respond to longer writing prompts, and engage in group discussions and activities relating to the content and context of the book. 

Homework will include reading approximately two to three chapters, answering short-answer comprehension questions, and writing two to three paragraphs in response to critical thinking and writing prompts. Students will be expected to arrive to class ready to discuss the assigned chapters and share some of their paragraph responses. Ideal for grades 5-6.
